SULPHUR — The city of Sulphur and its Armed Forces Committee will celebrate Veterans Day in a big way with their inaugural “Honoring All Who Served” parade today.
The parade, with nearly 40 floats, will roll down Maplewood Drive, starting at 10 a.m. in the “S” curve between Novus and City Savings Bank and heading to Heritage Square.
Parade marshals are Col. Matthew McKenna and Command Sgt. Maj. Benny Hobbs from the 162nd Infantry Brigade at Fort Polk. Motorcycles will lead the parade with parade marshals, Stars and Stripes Queens, floats, and the Sulphur High School band to follow.
Mayor Chris Duncan said the parade is expected to last until 11 a.m., with events and the Veterans Day program to follow at Sulphur Parks and Recreation, 933 W. Parish Road. He encouraged all Southwest Louisiana residents to attend and enjoy the activities while honoring veterans.
Sulphur will have the only parade in Southwest Louisiana.
“We wanted to expand our Veterans Day program and have it be a highlight of Southwest Louisiana. We feel like having a parade is important and part of that, and we plan to have a parade from here on out,” Duncan said.
“Sulphur has always put back into the community, and our veterans are very important. My dad is a veteran, and honoring them is important and letting them know that we appreciate their service.”
Duncan said there is something for everyone — military displays, laser tag, a maze.
The program will begin after and will include a color guard, patriotic songs and a tribute to POW/MIAs.
“The program has grown every year, and we anticipate to continue growing as well,” Duncan said. “We are taking baby steps, but eventually we will turn this into an all-day event.”
