A 61-year-old Sulphur man was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle as he was walking eastbound on Interstate 10 about 312 miles from Sulphur, according to Louisiana State Police.

Sgt. James Anderson said a preliminary investigation revealed that Timothy Johnson was walking in the outside travel lane on I-10 when he was struck by a 2001 Buick driven by Jana Doyle, 30, of Starks.

Anderson said Doyle swerved in an attempt to avoid Johnson but was unsuccessful.

Anderson said troopers were nearby responding to a single-vehicle south of I-10, about four miles west of Sulphur, in which the driver exited the roadway and crashed into trees. Investigators determined that Johnson was driving the vehicle involved in the crash and was walking away from it when he was struck by Doyle around 3:06 a.m., Anderson said.

The Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

Anderson said impairment on the part of Johnson is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken from both Johnson and Doyle to be submitted for analysis.

Anderson said Doyle was not charged, but the crash remains under investigation.””
