Sulphur man charged with forgery

A 31-year-old Sulphur man has been charged with forgery, authorities said.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Terry L. Avery, 390 Moss Road, was arrested on Nov. 16 following a week-long investigation.
“On Nov. 7 detectives were contacted by the fraud investigator of a local bank in reference to numerous counterfeit checks that were cashed at several bank locations in Calcasieu Parish,” Myers said on Thursday. “Detectives reviewed video from Nov. 5 and 7 that showed Avery cashing checks totaling over $12,500.”
Myers said Avery admitted to the forgery and that he received the counterfeit checks from a man he met in Lafayette.
The Secret Service’s Southwest Louisiana Financial Crimes Task Force is investigating the origins of the counterfeit checks.
Judge Wilford Carter set Avery’s bond at $3,000.
Detective Eddie Curol was the lead investigator.
