Towner leads Rads over Lady Hounds

WESTLAKE ­— The Westlake Lady Rams opened the Lakeside Bank Holiday Classic in style, beating Welsh 55-34 in the opening round.

The Rams (1-0) advance to play Washington-Marion at 2 p.m. today. Washington-Marion advanced with a win over Grand Lake.

Jaden Towner scored 31 points to lead Westlake, including 11 in the first quarter as Westlake opened the game with a 14-3 run. Towner scored the last six points of the outburst, each basket coming after Westlake’s pressure defense forced a steal.

Welsh’s Acie Hebert scored six of her team-high 11 points in the opening quarter as the Lady Hounds recovered from the slow start to close the quarter with a 7-5 spurt.

Westlake put the game out of reach with a 9-2 run to close the half, taking a 34-17 lead into the break. Towner again scored the final six points of the run, finishing the half with 21 points.

Ty Tanner added 10 points for the Rams and had three steals in the first quarter as Westlake forced eight Welsh turnovers.

Skyler Johnson scored nine points for Welsh, six coming in the second half.

Welsh outscored Westlake 11-9 in the fourth quarter and pulled within 15, the smallest deficit of the second half, with a 7-1 run to open the final quarter. Macala Broussard made a pair of jumpers in the run and scored all six of her points in the fourth.(Kirk Meche/Special to the American Press)
