SULPHUR — The city golf championship is back on and earlier than ever.

After last year’s rains postponed the Sulphur City Championship until the fall, officials decided to move the event up this summer in hopes of gaining a little more interest.

George McInnis, professional at Frasch Park Golf Club, said players requested the change. They asked for the move in order to draw interest to the event and as a tune-up to next week’s Lake Charles City Championship.

“We are always listening to the players,” said McInnis.

Still, the number of entries has remained about the same, McInnis said. This year he is looking at about 50, including last year’s champ Jim Morrissey. Spots are available for what is expected to be the 4-5 flight event. Only the championship flight will play 54 holes with the first tee time set for 12:30 p.m. today.

“We are looking forward to this weekend,” McInnis said. “The weather is supposed to be good and the course is in great shape.”

He did admit he wished the number of golfers playing would be higher.

“The more the merrier,” he said. “We have tried just about everything and we are open to suggestions. We would love to have this grow. If anybody has any ideas let us know.”

The tournament runs through Sunday and should end in the middle of the afternoon if all goes well.
