at home this week

McNeese volleyball will continue its four-match home stand this week with three matches beginning with Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. match against Prairie View.

The Cowgirls will also host its own round robin on Friday, Sept. 20 with matches against Grambling (12:30 p.m.) and UL-Monroe at 6 p.m. Grambling and UL-Monroe will face off at 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s match will be streamed live and live stats will be available on mcneesesports.com.

On Friday, it will be a McNeese Volleyball camper’s reunion. All kids that took part in a Cowgirl volleyball camp in the summer are welcomed back for Friday’s matches free of charge and must wear their camper’s t-shirt.

McNeese (4-4), has won two of its last three matches including a straight set win over Texas Southern one week ago.

The Cowgirls have had several players step up to make contributions due to injuries in the last two matches.

Keegan Nelms continues to lead McNeese with 73 kills and is second on the team with 85 digs. Kendall Glueck (60 kills), Macee Krpec (58 kills), and Allison Lippert (50 kills) have all given the Cowgirls added offense.

Four players have over 20 blocks apiece with Lippert leading the way with 36. Caitlin Sharrock and Kendall Kilchrist have shared the setter duties. Kilchrist has dished out 157 assists for an average of 4.91 per set while Sharrock has dished out 114 for 5.18 per set.

Angela McGownd continued her solid defensive play in the back row. The senior has picked up double figure digs in all eight matches so far and 20 or more in five matches.

Prairie View (0-11) is coming off two five set losses against Abilene Christian and Cal State-Fullerton and a straight set loss to North Texas at the Abilene Christian Wildcat Classic last weekend.

McNeese will be the third Southland Conference school the Panthers will have played so far this season. Sam Houston State defeated Prairie View 3-2 at the Sam Houston State Tournament to open the season and Lamar defeated the Panthers in straight sets on Sept. 6 at the Lamar Katrinka Crawford Invitational.

Prior to its win over Prairie View last weekend, Abilene Christian also defeated the Panthers 3-1 at Prairie View on Sept. 8.

Holmes leads
McNeese golfers

SAN ANTONIO – McNeese’s Greg Holmes scored rounds of 71-76 in the first two rounds of the UTSA Lone Star Invitational at the TPC San Antonio here Monday, ending the day in a tie for 16th place on the individual leaderboard at 3-over par to lead the Cowboys.

As a team, McNeese is in 11th place heading into Tuesday’s final round after recording scores of 300-310 for a 610 total while Houston and Texas-Arlington top the team leaderboard with scores of 577.

Holmes was in the top 10 after the first round where he shot a 1-under 71. Starting on hole No. 9, the freshman was even through nine holes then birdied Nos. 1 and 2 to get to 2-under par. Bogeys on holes 4 and 5 brought him back to even but then he birdied the final hole to finish the round under par.

In the second round, Holmes bogeyed his first two holes then double-bogeyed No. 12 to put him at 4-over for the round. He rallied himself with three birdies over the next nine holes to get him to 1-over for the round but a bogey and double-bogey on Nos. 4 and 8 ended his day with a 76 for the round.

Jack Hearn was the next best finisher for the Cowboys, shooting rounds of 75-78 for a 9-over 153. Louis Talarczyk (78-77) and Chase White (76-79) each ended the day with scores of 155 and Reid Giardina shot a 161 (81-80).

Lipscomb’s Nolan Ray shot rounds of 65-69 for a 134 to end the day in first place on the individual leaderboard.

Tuesday’s final round will carry an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
