Former LSU star pitcher Anthony Ranaudo won’t have long to settle into his role as a Boston Red Sox.

Ranaudo was called up by the Red Sox Thursday and will be thrown into baseball’s fiercest rivalry in his major league debut tonight when he starts against the New York Yankees.

The spot on the big club came open after a busy day of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, which ended with the Red Sox trading frontline pitchers Jon Lester and John Lackey.

Ranaudo, who was the winning pitcher in LSU’s 2009 national championship game as a sophomore, struggled with injuries the next season, but was still taken by the Red Sox with the 39th overall pick in 2010.

At the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket this season, Ranaudo was 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA while striking out 99 in 119 innings.

He is the third member of LSU’s 2009 national championship team to reach the majors and the sixth for head coach Paul Mainieri. According to LSU, tonight will also mark the 22nd season in the last 24 years that at least one former Tiger has made his big-leagues debut.
