Fishing Report: Action heats up after cool front pushes through

“Fishing picked up with this cool front,” said veteran guide Capt. Kirk Stansel. He reported that the water has cleared up with good catches in the surf as well as along the ship channel, which is saying summer patterns are here.

Early morning topwaters have been good and, about 8 a.m. when the sun starts up, they are switching over to live bait. Stansel said live finger mullet worked on a Carolina rig has been the best. On topwater, Mirrolure’s She Dogs in chartreuse or pink have been working early.

In addition, Stansel reported one of their captains at Hackberry Rod and Gun, Anthony Busceme, caught a 29-inch trout that went 8.5 pounds on a pogy under a popping cork.

Also at Hackberry Rod and Gun, Capt. Buddy Oakes said hot weather and hot fishing dominated the past week with catches of tripletail, big trout and redfish.

New Star leader

Clark Poorboy is the leader in the Statewide Tournament and Anglers Rodeo with a trout weighing 8.29 pounds. Readers might remember that name as we wrote about Mr. Poorboy a few weeks ago after he caught a speck that weighed more than 9 pounds but was not signed up for STAR.

After that incident, Poorboy signed up and made another trip to Lake Calcasieu and caught another monster trout.

Tournament Results

Last week’s winners of the Wednesday Afternoon Dogfights on the Calcasieu River were Doug Guins and daughter Annabelle Guins with a five-fish stringer of 5.32 pounds. They also had the big bass (2.97) that hit a Bass Kandi Candy Stix. Guinns reported they were fishing in the main river channel.

In second was Edward Bourque and Joe Bourque with 2.54 pounds. They reported fishing the main river. Mike Johnson and Todd Fontenot rounded out the top three with 2.4 pounds. They fished in the West Fork using Horny Toad plastic frogs.

Southern Outdoors: Results of the Summer Classic 1 on the Calcasieu River on June 29. Anglers reported that the bite was good early but fell off quickly as temperatures started to rise.

Most reported that they were catching fish on topwater using buzzbaits and frogs.

First place went to Craig Bean and Steve Goff with 8.11 pounds. Second went to Shane Cormier and Greg Byrley (7.97), followed by Sean Meche and Robert Wymes (7.51).

Big bass was caught by Clay Dardeau (3.17).

The next event is Saturday on Toledo Bend.
