Cowgirls splits Sunday doubleheader with Lady Lions

So, maybe the Cowgirls are capable of dropping a game on occasion.
After losing the first game of a Sunday doubleheader with Southeastern La., McNeese State’s softball team picked up a Southland Conference series win with a 4-2 victory in the second game. The Cowgirls dropped the first game 5-3, losing their first SLC game of the season.
In the second game, Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Michelle Duhe scored on a wild pitch.
McNeese (26-8, 7-1) responded with three runs in the second after a RBI double by Katie Roux that scored Alanna DiVittorio. A sacrifice by Taylor Goree scored Roux. Emily Vincent later scored on a throwing error for the 3-1 lead.
Southeastern added a run in the fourth after a Katie Doyle triple that scored Kelsey Nichols to cut into McNeese’s lead.
DiVittorio’s fifth-inning solo homer, her second of the series and fifth this season, gave McNeese a 4-2 lead.
Vincent and Roux led the Cowgirls with two hits apiece while Jamie Allred picked up her second win of the series to improve to 13-2. Allred gave up six hits in the complete game victory and struck out four without giving up a walk.
McNeese had its chances in the first game, resumed after rain postponed it yesterday, but stranded 14 base runners. The Cowgirls left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Southeastern took a 5-1 lead with a single run in the third and a three-run homerun in the fifth by designated player Amber Sather.
McNeese cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the sixth on a RBI single by Lauren Langner that scored Lakeyn Fontenot. The other came on a fielder’s choice that scored Tori Rich.
McNeese held Southeastern scoreless in the top of the seventh and missed a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the inning. After Roux flied out for the first out, Marissa Koetting walked and Ashley Modzelewski reached base via fielder’s choice. Back-to-back singles by Rich and Langner put runners on second and third with two outs but DiVittorio’s ground out ended the game.
Meagan Bond took the complete game loss, falling to 11-3 on the year. Bond gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out nine.
McNeese will travel to Central Arkansas this weekend for a Southland Conference series.
