Cowgirls open Southland play at home Saturday

McNeese State’s softball team will open Southland Conference play this weekend when they host Northwestern State in a three-game series.

The series will begin with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday and will conclude with a 1 p.m. Sunday game.

The Cowgirls (16-7) have won seven of their last eight games and return to Cowgirl Diamond for its first game since losing to Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 20.

Freshman Emily Vincent (.382) leads the Cowgirls with six home runs and 28 RBIs. Lauren Langner (.360, 11 RBIs) leads the team with 27 hits.

Junior outfielder Alanna DiVittorio is one walk away from becoming the all-time leader. DiVittorio (.333, 12 RBIs) has 86 career walks and leads the team with 14 this season. She leads the team with 19 runs scored and five doubles.

Senior Meagan Bond (7-2, 1.27 ERA) and freshman Jamie Allred (7-2, 1.69) are separated by one strikeout. Bond has 60 and Allred had 59.

Northwestern State (18-3) has three players batting better than .400, led by Brianna Rodriquez (.420, 22 RBIs). Brittany Virgoe (.411, 5 HR) is second on the team with seven doubles. Cassandra Barefield leads the Demons with six home runs.””msu-logo2013-04-25T16-47-18Nathan Fontaine
