After suffering through a three-game drought, the McNeese State baseball team is hoping that maybe it found a springboard performance against a rival.

The Cowboys look to build on their 17-inning win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday when they host former Southland Conference member Texas-San Antonio in a three-game weekend series.

First pitch for the series opener at Cowboy Diamond is set for 4 p.m. today with a doubleheader set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

McNeese (5-4) snapped a four-game skid with the 5-4 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette. It came after the Cowboys went last weekend without scoring a run against Bradley.

The Roadrunners (6-2), who opened the season with a series win against Louisiana-Lafayette, bring a four-game winning streak to town.

Kaleb Fontenot (1-1) is expected to start the series opener for the Cowboys. The right-hander has a 2.38 earned run average. Bryce Kinglsey (1-1) will start the first game Saturday coming off a seven-inning performance that saw him lose to Bradley despite allowing just one unearned run.

“If we can get that type of performance out of Bryce every time he will win a lot of games,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.

Even during the skid Hill said he felt as if his team was playing well for the most part.

“I think we were just a hit or a play away,” he said.

Hill’s hoping that the Cowboys found their game against ULL.

Junior Lewis Guilbeau leads the Cowboys with a .345 (10-for-29) batting average after collecting three hits against ULL. Guilbeau has 10 hits, two doubles, four walks and a stolen base. Junior Connor Crane (.342) leads the team with 13 hits, including five doubles, a triple and two homers.

UTSA is expected to start right-hander Brock Hartson (2-2, 6.75) and lefties Nolan Trabanino (0-1, 5.59) and Cody Brannon (1-0, 4.63).

In two starts Hartson has given up 14 hits and seven earned runs through 913 innings. Trabanino has worked 923 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs. In four appearances Brannon and has given up six runs and 11 hits in 1123 innings.””
