The Barbe football team retained its Class 5A No. 1 ranking in the LSWA Football Poll released today. The Bucs defeated Washington-Marion 52-12 last week. West Monroe, which will come to Lake Charles in Week Three of the season, fell to Mississippi’s Madison Central 28-27 in overtime last week, dropping the Rebels from No. 2 to No. 4 in the poll.

West Monroe’s slight fall in the polls shouldn’t make its match-up with Barbe any less enticing, though.

LaGrange fell out of the Top 10 in the Class 4A poll, but the Gators are still receiving votes after a 28-14 loss at Notre Dame.

Despite a 27-7 win against Erath on Friday, Iowa fell from No. 7 to No. 8 in the Class 3A poll, where Westlake and Jennings aren’t in the Top 10, but are receiving votes.

In Class 2A, Welsh moved up two spots to No. 8 in the poll and Kinder moved to No. 8 from being unranked to start the season.

Basile checks in at No. 7 in the 1A poll.

Around the world: Westlake softball player Chelsey Main was recently invited by Team AIST (American International Sports Teams) to represent the United States in international softball competitions in Arrezzo, Italy and the Dominican Republic.

The tournament dates for the competition in Italy haven’t yet been determined, but the tournament in the Dominican Republic will take place July 29 through Aug. 4.

The sophomore catcher and third baseman was a Second Team All-District performer last season as a freshman.

Main plays on the Louisiana Voodoo 16u team, based in New Orleans. The Voodoo traveled to the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament in Boulder, Colo. this summer as well as the ASA 16u National Championships in Sunnyvale, Calif., where the team finished 49th out of 138 squads in attendance.

Field of excellence: Elton High School’s football field at Indian Stadium was recently named the 2013 High School Football Field of the Year by the Louisiana Turf Grass Association.

The LSU AgCenter created a program to work with high school coaches to improve playing surfaces for young athletes, known as the Field of Excellence program. The LSU AgCenter was contacted to help improve the condition of the Elton football field during the summer.

The field was examined by state turf grass specialist Dr. Ron Strahan and Jeff Davis County Agent Frances Guidry, after which they determined to move forward with the Field of Excellence program on the field. The goal of the program is to reduce injuries and have a beautiful field. The program shows the coaches what and when to spray, how much fertilizer to apply, how to water and mow the turf properly and also addresses any other problems the field may have.

All of these improvements combine to make the field a safer surface for the players by forming a soft surface for the players to fall on. The Elton Indians were granted a $500 check for their selection as football field of the year.
