For the first time in five years, a local football team will be playing for a state football championship.

Barbe (13-1) will play Archbishop Rummel (13-0) in the final game of the Prep Classic at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The last area team to reach the Superdome was Westlake in 2007. The Rams lost the 3A title game 19-18 to Parkview Baptist.

The previous year, Sulphur lost the 5A game 13-10 to Acadiana.

The last area school to win a championship was Iota, which won the 1999 Class 2A title with a 35-23 win over Port Barre.

The last Lake Charles school to win a state title was W.O. Boston in 1972. The Panthers beat Haynesville 11-6 for the Class AA championship.

Tickets for this weekend’s Prep Classic in the Superdome in New Orleans can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the Superdome’s Box Office.

Participating teams will have advance tickets for sale at their schools.
