SULPHUR — The Acadiana Rams wrecked Sulphur’s party once again, sweeping the Tors in three sets in a Division I, District 2 volleyball match Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams (11-9, 1-2) won 25-17, 25-9, 25-18. Sulphur (13-9, 2-1) entered the match having won its last eight.

Last season, Acadiana ended the Tors’ season with a playoff win in Sulphur.

The Tors were their own worst enemy for most of Tuesday’s match.

“Just looking at the stats, we gave up about 30-something points on errors,” said Tors head coach Julie Mancuso. “We just can’t do that against a good team like that. I don’t think we played as good as we could have. They were definitely the better team tonight.”

Acadiana opened the match with a 6-1 outburst before Sulphur rallied to take a 9-6 lead. Sydney Seaford had a kill and two aces for the Tors during the outburst. Acadiana scored the next seven points and never trailed again in the opening set. The Rams closed the game with a 6-2 run featuring a pair of kills by Destinie McCoy.

The Rams dominated the second set, getting help from six Sulphur errors. Acadiana outside hitter Kennedi Smith had three aces, two kills and a block in the game.

Game 3 was more competitive with Sulphur scoring the first four points and forcing a tie at 14-14 midway through. But Acadiana once again surged late to finish off the match, scoring 11 of the last 15 points.

Smith and Charmae Cormier had two kills each in the game. Jordyn Leger added a pair of aces. Sulphur committed seven errors, including four straight at one point.

“We didn’t give up that many points on our side (during the winning streak),” Mancuso said. “We have to do better than that to compete in this district. I told them to keep their heads up. We had moved up in the rankings before this game. Acadiana was ahead of us. They, Comeaux and us are kind of stacked at 13, 14 and 15. We have to try to take care of our side of the court and change some things around before we play Barbe on Thursday. That is going to be a tough one.”

Kaitlyn Gertz had five kills, a block and an ace for Sulphur. Seaford added two kills, two aces and a block.

McCoy finished with seven kills and two aces for Acadiana. Smith added six kills and two aces.””
