Last Modified: Monday, April 21, 2014 10:52 AMTwenty-three of Southwest Louisiana’s 36 prep softball teams saw their seasons extended by at least one game Thursday when the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoff brackets were released.
Claiming the area’s lone No. 1 seed was three-time defending Class C state champion Hackberry. The Mustangs are looking for their fifth consecutive championship appearance.
Hackberry, having earned a first-round bye, will begin play in the second round when they play host to No. 16 Grand Isle. A win in that game will book their ticket to the Fast Pitch 56 tournament in Sulphur.
The area’s other three-time defending state champion, Sam Houston, was also among the teams to make the cut, earning the 14-seed in Class 5A. They will host No. 19 Fontainebleau on at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The mid-level seed shouldn’t be too much of a factor for the Broncos who cruised to their third consecutive state title with the 19 seed in 2013.
Sam Houston’s co-District 3-5A champion, Sulphur, will be the 16th seed and will host No. 17 Zachary at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The area’s first matchup of local teams comes in the Class 3A, where No. 27 Westlake travels to No. 6 Iota in the opening round. Iota swept the season series, beating the Rams 9-5 and 5-1 in district play.
In the second all-area game, No. 13 DeQuincy will host No. 20 Kinder in Class 2A. DeQuincy swept the season series, defeating the Jackets 3-1 and 2-0 in district play.
