Deputies shoot armed man near home on Copperleaf Drive

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s officers shot an armed man Tuesday night, authorities said.

Two deputies were responding to a disturbance on Copperleaf Drive south of Lake Charles, when a man approached them with a shotgun and a Q-Beam, Sheriff Tony Mancuso said. The officers shot the man in the abdomen and in the leg, Mancuso said.

The man, who was in his mid-60s, was transported to a local hospital and Mancuso said he did not know whether the man’s injuries were life-threatening.

Mancuso said he requested Louisiana State Police investigate the shooting and would rely on the state agency to release the man’s name. He said that it is protocol to ask state police to investigate shootings by officers. He said he did not plan to release the names of the officers involved.

The man’s name was not available Tuesday night, Troop D spokesman James Anderson said.

Authorities were called to 7638 Copperleaf a little after 7 p.m. because of a dispute between neighbors, Mancuso said. The man’s neighbors said he had been threatening them with a gun, Mancuso said.

The officers yelled at the man to come out of the house; when he came out of the house, he had a shotgun and a Q-Beam, Mancuso said. He pointed the gun at the deputies and they shot him, Mancuso said.

“Unfortunately, that’s what happens,” Mancuso said. “When police officers encounter people with weapons, it usually doesn’t turn out very good. I’m glad none of our officers were hurt, and their actions, in my opinion, were appropriate.”

Mancuso said it was “very possible” that alcohol or drugs was involved in the incident.

The neighborhood, off Tank Farm Road, is “fairly quiet,” Mancuso said. He said there has been only one other call to the residence, although he did not know the nature of the call.

“We don’t ever want to be put in this situation to have to shoot somebody, but that’s what happens when you come after a police officer or anybody and police officers are around with a gun,” Mancuso said. “Some lives will be changed here tonight and that’s unfortunate.”
