An investigation into the online activities of convicted sex offenders resulted in the arrests of 21 local people, authorities said Thursday.

Nearly all of the offenders arrested Wednesday were from Lake Charles, although one was from Hayes and another from Sulphur, said James Anderson, spokesman for Louisiana State Police’s Troop D.

Sex offenders are banned from social media if their crime involves a minor, Anderson said.

Twenty people were charged with unlawful use of social media and failure to provide sex offender status notification on a social media page. They were booked into Calcasieu Correctional Center on $17,500 bond each.

One person was booked only on the charge of failure to provide sex offender status notification on a social media page. Her bond was set at $7,500.

Authorities began investigating “the online Internet activities of registered sex offenders in Calcasieu Parish,” as part of “Operation Off Limits” earlier this summer, Anderson said. “Troopers coordinated their investigative efforts with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, Louisiana Probation and Parole, Lake Charles City Police, and the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office in a joint investigation.”

The investigation is ongoing, Anderson said.
