Schedule readies Gators

LaGrange has been through the fire in its nondistrict schedule the last couple years, and if last week’s performance is any indication the gamble may pay off again.

Head coach Jules Sullen scheduled a difficult slate to prepare his team and hopes to move to 2-0 in District 4-4A by defeating Eunice (3-2, 1-1).

Eunice lost an overtime game to Washington-Marion last week and LaGrange (1-4, 1-1) expects no surprises from the Bobcats.

“It’s more of a system instead of one or two people you have to stop,” Sullen said. “From a defensive side of the ball you can’t be overaggressive.”

Sullen said quarterback Jeremiah West, who sat out last week with a hamstring injury, will start this week but that both he and Alvinosky Lafleur will get time at quarterback.

Sulphur at Carencro

What started as a Guillory Watch now has made Sulphur one to watch in District 3-5A.

After winning three games last year in head coach Jeff Wainwright’s first season leading the Golden Tors, Sulphur has won three games in a row and is unbeaten in district play.

Sulphur (3-2, 2-0) will take that three-game winning streak on the road for a surprising first-place matchup with Carencro (4-1, 2-0) tonight.

They’ll do so behind Guillory, the state’s leading rusher, who has 1,214 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Carencro, who defeated Comeaux 24-21 last week, comes in with a balanced offense that ran and threw for more than 100 yards last week.

Barbe at Lafayette

Barbe (3-2, 1-1), coming off a 17-14 upset of Acadiana last week, travels to play Lafayette (4-1, 1-1).

The Lions are led by quarterback Tre Celestin, who ran for 110 yards in Lafayette’s 27-22 win over New Iberia.

New Iberia at Sam Houston

Meanwhile, Sam Houston (4-1, 1-1) is hoping to rebound from last week’s 21-7 loss to Sulphur against New Iberia (1-4, 0-2). The Yellow Jackets are struggling but boasts one of the state’s top quarterback-receiver combinations.

Class 4A

Leesville (2-3) and DeRidder (3-2) will do battle for the Hooper Memorial Trophy in a rivalry game to open District 4-4A play, while Washington-Marion (1-4, 1-1) hopes to make it two wins in a row against Crowley (4-1, 2-0).(Rick Hickman/American Press)
