The Strides for St. Nicholas 5K and 1 Mile Jolly Jog will be Saturday, Dec. 1.
The 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral School parking lot, at 1536 Ryan St. Registration for the 5K and the Jolly Jog is $25 and $20; event-day sign-up will be at 6:45 a.m. in the school gym.
Proceeds will benefit the St. Nicholas Center, at 314 Broad St. The center provides occupational, speech and physical therapy; social skills training; and tutoring to children with autism, developmental delays and neurological disorders.
“This is our fifth year doing this, and as far as 5Ks around here go, we’re really successful,” said Chris Jones, the center’s board president.
“We’re not looking to raise a lot of money from this event, but really are looking just to raise awareness that we’re here and of the services we provide for special-needs children.”
Jones said the center now helps more than 60 children, but that the money raised by the event could help it aid even more.
“We have more kids on our waiting list, and are getting ready to move into a bigger facility to have room for them,” Jones said. “Insurance pays for most of the kids’ therapy, but we could use the money for toys for the kids to play with and other supplies.”
