Special Olympics Louisiana will hold its Polar Plunge fundraiser at 9 a.m. March 2, at L’Auberge Casino Resort.

Groups of five or six will don costumes and jump headfirst into the casino’s pool to raise money for Special Olympics programs.

“This is an event we do across the country. In some states in the north they just cut a circle out of the ice and have people jump in,” said Tiffany Harvey-Gautier, director of internal communications and marketing for Special Olympics Louisiana.

“It’s a little different here. We’ve had it before when it was really cold and everyone was really freezing after they jumped in; other times it was slightly warmer. Sometimes we even put ice in the water to make it colder.”

The event, which is taking place in Lake Charles for the first time, will also run concurrently in Gonzales and Shreveport. Proceeds will go to fund sports competitions and programs held statewide.

“We have about 100 different sports competitions we host a year in Louisiana, and also have health and inclusion programs, health screening, young athlete programs and youth and family support programs,” Gautier said.

“We do anything we can do to make the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities better. In 2013 we need to raise $2.8 million in Louisiana to do that.”

Tickets for the event are $50 per person.
