There is no such thing as too much pizza.
Even though we reviewed a regional pizzeria chain last week, Johnathan Manning and I decided to give a new local pie shop a try this week.
New York Pizza, Pasta, Gyro & Salad, located at 1221 Martin Luther King Hwy., opened a little more than a month ago. The restaurant is in the old Pink Pig building on MLK Highway.
The owner, whose family runs a couple of restaurants in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area, did a good job renovating the place and making it his own.
There is nothing ground breaking or novel about New York’s menu. But there is something to be said for sticking with the basics and doing it well at a very fair price.
If you have ever visited a pizzeria before you’ll know what to expect.
There are appetizers, salads, gyros, pizzas, gyro and pizza rolls, calzones, strombolis, pasta dishes, hot subs and desserts.
One thing I really liked was the pizza-by-the-slice option.
A cheese-only slice is $1.75 and it is $3.50 for supreme and $3.95 for stuffed-meat pizza. Additional toppings will cost you 30 cents each.
The slices are large and one should be more than enough to fill you up for lunch.
I ordered a slice of the stuffed-meat pizza and a spinach pizza roll.
The stuffed pizza was good. I knew that it had Canadian bacon, my second-most hated topping behind only anchovies. But it was easy to pick out the ham and I still enjoyed the slice.
The spinach pizza roll was fantastic and a great deal at $1.99. The roll was soft and flaky but held together well under the weight of all the cheese and fresh spinach.
Johnathan ordered a stromboli and pepperoni pizza roll. The stromboli, at $7.99, is stuffed with pepperoni, hamburger, Italian sasuage, Canadian bacon and cheese, then covered in New York’s marinara sauce.
Johnathan and I split an appetizer — an order of cheesy garlic bread for $2.99 — and it was our favorite item by far.
The quality and taste of all the food was quite a bit above the typical chain pizzerias found in malls across the county.
I really want to go back and try a few of the other menu items that caught my attention.
I am a sucker for lamb meat and New York’s has six gyro options.
New York’s also boasts 14 specialty pizzas and every one of them sounded delicious. Especially the Bianca Pizza, which is described as having tomatoes, garlic, spinach and ricotta and mozzarella cheeses on a New York-style crust.
New York’s has a lunch menu.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, you can get bread, salad and a choice of pasta dish for $5.99. Not bad and a heck of a lot better deal that a value meal from a fast food chain.
Granted, we ate a little after the usual lunch rush. But our waitress was helpful with menu suggestions and our food was prepared and delivered quickly. We were in and out in well under 45 minutes.
Our bill came to just under $25 dollars and both of us were full and brought home some leftovers.
