Savoie elected; Redd, Schrumpf in runoff

Voters on Tuesday elected a new judge for the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal, while two candidates vying for a 14th Judicial District Court judgeship will face each other in a runoff, according to unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website.

Voters elected Kent Savoie to the appellate court over Jamie Yelverton. Savoie received 46,933 votes, or 59 percent, and Yelverton received 32,733 votes, or 41 percent.

Savoie, who has served 13 years as a 14th Judicial District Court judge, will replace Judge David Painter, who is retiring.

In Calcasieu Parish, Savoie received 28,585 votes, or 60 percent; Yelverton received 18,686 votes, or 40 percent.

In Beauregard Parish, Savoie received 5,208 votes, or 53 percent; Yelverton received 4,663, or 47 percent.

In Jeff Davis Parish, Savoie received 4,999 votes, or 52 percent; Yelverton received 4,637 votes, or 48 percent.

In Cameron Parish, Savoie received 1,693 votes, or 67 percent; Yelverton received 846 votes, or 33 percent.

In Vernon Parish, Savoie received 6,448 votes, or 62 percent; Yelverton received 3,901 votes, or 38 percent.

Savoie said he was pleased to have run a “hard-fought campaign” and that he and Yelverton both ran clean campaigns.

Meanwhile, William “Mitch” Redd and Oliver “Jackson” Schrumpf will face each other in a runoff Dec. 6 to determine who will be the next 14th Judicial District Court judge for Division A.

Redd received 8,801 votes, or 47 percent, while Schrumpf received 6,113 votes, or 32 percent. Another challenger, David Palay, received 3,950 votes, or 21 percent. All votes were cast in Calcasieu Parish.

The following 14th Judicial District Court divisions were already re-elected: Clayton Davis, Division B; Guy E. Bradberry, Division C; Robert L.
