SW La. chooses Rep. Bill Cassidy

If Tuesday’s results are any indication, Rep. Bill Cassidy has a sizeable lead over Sen. Mary Landrieu in Southwest Louisiana ahead of the Dec. 6 runoff election for the U.S. Senate seat.

Even though Landrieu, D-La., received 42 percent of the vote statewide compared with Cassidy’s 41 percent, she was behind her opponent in each of the six Southwest Louisiana parishes, according to results from the Secretary of State’s Office.

Landrieu faces an uphill battle across the state. Her campaign theme of clout was undermined Tuesday when the Democratic Party was downgraded to minority status in the Senate. So if Landrieu were re-elected, she would still lose her coveted Senate Energy Committee chairmanship — a position she said the state greatly benefited from — to a Republican.

With polls showing her trailing Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, in the runoff, Landrieu made a campaign stop in New Orleans on Wednesday. At the event, she acknowledged the “difficult campaign” coupled with a “very difficult national atmosphere” and said she is not backing down from pointing out Cassidy’s “pitiful record.” Cassidy did not have any public events on Wednesday.

“I believe now, as I said last night, this is the race I have always wanted to run,” Landrieu said. “I am prepared to run on my record of delivering for this state.”

A Landrieu campaign aide said the senator will be back in Southwest Louisiana soon to campaign. Cassidy’s campaign officials did not return requests for comment on Wednesday.

Here’s how the top three Senate candidates fared in Southwest Louisiana on Tuesday:
