The $1.7 million expansion of the SPAR water park in Sulphur will include “a lazy river” and a larger pool area for children, allowing people more room and offering “something for the more mature crowd,” said Norman Farr, director of Sulphur Parks and Recreation.

“I think this expansion is going to be nice and add something for the adults,” he said.

“A lot of them come now, but I think this will add an attraction for them and maybe increase attendance a little. I think the expansion will just add to the total experience at the water park for teenagers and adults. There will be more of something for everyone.”

The expansion is expected to be complete by mid- to late summer, Farr said. The park has three water slides, a pool area, and a splash pad and kids area.

Funds for the expansion came out of the facility’s general fund and is “money that we have saved over the years,” he said. Some of the expansion costs include improving existing amenities.

Farr said the expansion won’t affect admission prices to the water park — $4 for in-district residents and $6 for out-of-district residents — but there is discussion of whether there will be a “small fee” for the lazy river.

“With the expansion, we will have to increase our lifeguard staff, and we’ll have to supply tubes for the lazy river,” he said. “It’s being discussed on how we will address that in terms of charging a fee.”
