Richard steps up to German League

Former McNeese State standout Patrick Richard is stepping up in competition next year.

The small forward signed a one-year deal to play in the top German league next season.

Since leaving McNeese in 2012, Richard has made a name for himself playing overseas. Now he will get a chance to compete in a top level.

Richard signed with Mittelbeutsacher BC Weissenfels of the Basketball Bundesliga.

“This is a big step up for me,” said Richard, who is training for his new challenge. “This is a great opportunity for me to not only find out what I can do but also show what I can do.

“I’m excited for the challenge.”

One group Richard said he hopes to get seen by is NBA scouts. The 6-foot-5, 207-pounder still has hopes of playing in the NBA.

“That is the dream, the ultimate goal,” Richard said. “I think this can only help. This is a step toward that goal.”

Playing overseas has been good for Richard. He has not only be able to continue his career but also make a nice living doing so.

And he enjoys Europe.

“It has been great for me,” he said. “I really enjoy playing over there. The style is perfect for my game.

“I get to play basketball for a living and that is great. I want to play for as long as I can.”

Richard was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year his senior season, leading the Cowboys with almost 18 points a game.

Last year he played for Matrixx Magixx of the Dutch Basketball League. He helped them make the playoffs, earning all-star honors and a place on the all-DBL Team.

Richard averaged 15.1 points and 4.8 rebounds a game with the club which was based in Wijchen.

He started his pro career in the NBA’s Developmental League for the Iowa Energy from Des Moines.(MGNonline)
