Leaders call Kleckley recall push a 'grass-roots effort'

The effort to recall House Speaker Chuck Kleckley, R-Lake Charles, “has not been financed by any monies from any union or political party,” recall coordinator Angie Bonvillain said in an email Wednesday.

“We are still a grass-roots effort, with no funds received from any union affiliation,” said Bonvillain. “We have great respect for unions, but so far none have offered any support to our effort.”

Bonvillain responded to claims from Jason Doré, executive director of the Republican Party of Louisiana, that recall organizers have not filed a campaign finance report indicating who is paying for the effort. Organizers began pushing the recall effort in March, largely on the heels of public education reform efforts backed by Gov. Bobby Jindal which were approved by the state Legislature earlier this year. A similar effort is ongoing to recall Jindal.

“I am offended at the insinuation that being backed or affiliated with unions and organized labor is a bad thing,” she said.

The state Republican Party issued a response to the recall effort through television ads that support Kleckley that started airing two weeks ago. Bonvillain said Kleckley’s support from the party and Jindal is “like Goliath complaining that David has a sling shot.”

Recall organizers have to collect about 9,000 signatures — which is one-third of the registered voters in Kleckley’s District 36 — by Sept. 19. The voter registrar certifies the signatures 15 days after the deadline. Organizers have not announced how many signatures they have collected so far.

Bonvillain said they will host a petition signing 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday behind Coyote Blues on Ryan Street.

Title: How Sad

I feel sorry for you, Jeff.

Title: Breaking the law

Bonvillian is breaking the law, which (by the implied date they are due) was required to file a campaign finance report of all received and in-kind donations and expenditures by May 6. Interesting how lawbreakers are spearheading the effort to remove public officials.

Title: LAE Now Supporting Recall Effort

Earlier this week, LAE officially joined with Recall Jindal and now supports the recall effort. Until this time, we have been a grassroots effort. We welcome union assistance and thank LAE for their endorsement.
