The newest member of the McNeese State football team showed up in camp for the first time on Wednesday, eager to meet his teammates and learn a new system.

“I was able to catch on to a few things,” said redshirt freshman quarterback Leon Blouin IV, who left Tulane earlier this week. “It’s going to take awhile to get everything down, but I’m starting to get the offense. It’s just a little different than at Tulane. But I’m going to get it down pat.”

Blouin, who prepped at Dutchtown High, has four years of eligibility remaining.

“McNeese has a fantastic program,” Blouin said. “I want to be part of a winning team, and that’s exactly what they are. I have trust in Coach (Matt) Viator, and hopefully we’ll have a winning season this year.”

The Green Wave finished 2-11 last season, which led to the ousting of coach Bob Toledo. McNeese has not had a losing season in six years under Viator.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Blouin was on Viator’s radar when he was high school, which made the decision to bring him in an easy one.

“We’re real excited to get Leon in our situation, having just three quarterbacks,” Viator said. “He’s a great young man. He can throw. He’s a very good runner. He’s got a real strong arm. He comes from a winning (high school) program, which is important to us.

“We’re excited to have him. We’re going to try to fast-track him and get him on the field as fast as we can.”

Blouin was rated the No. 149 quarterback in the country by ESPN.com in 2010. He passed for 1,054 yards and ran for 1,129 yards as a senior.

The addition of Blouin fills a depth issue created for McNeese when Will Briscoe was lost for the year when he injured his left knee in the spring game. Riley Dodge was also supposed to return this year, but ended his career due to multiple concussions.

In addition to Blouin, 25 walk-ons joined the squad Wednesday, coinciding with the first day of classes.
