Project Build a Future enjoys giving season

The Christmas season is always a busy time for Project Build a Future. And the 2014 holiday season will be much the same for the nonprofit group as construction continues on a trio of affordable homes in the Church Street area, and the final steps of its Christmas adoption program are completed.

Nicole Miller, Project Build a Future executive director, said she wouldn’t have it any other way. Miller said the adoption program during the holidays is just a way to provide extra support to the households with children in the Project Build a Future family during the Christmas season.

“We sent letters to the families that have children, asking them if they wanted to be adopted.

“We received seven responses from families, saying they would love to participate because they did have needs during the holidays,” Miller said. “These families aren’t destitute. They just need a little help getting on their feet during this time of year. They don’t have the opportunities that other families would have.”

Each of the interested families sent in a wish list from the children in the home and a list that included some of the other, more mundane needs for the household like pots and pans.

Miller said the bulk of the presents will arrive at Project Build a Future on Monday and that the remainder of the week will be spent delivering those gifts to families.

Even though the period for adopting a family in need for the holidays has passed, Miller said there are still ways for locals to participate in an adoption program.

“People are moving into these homes all year long and oftentimes they have very little to put in the homes,” she said. “For those interested, it’s always a good thing to adopt a family and put together a move-in kit for them. It could be a package that includes things like mops and brooms.”
