NEW ORLEANS (AP) — William J. Guste Jr., Louisiana's longest-serving attorney general, has died.
His son, Bernard "Randy" Guste, confirmed Thursday that his father died Wednesday at Chateau de Notre Dame in New Orleans, where he had been receiving nursing care. He was 91.
Guste says his father "died a peaceful death."
The elder Guste, known by most as "Billy," was elected to the state Senate in 1968. He was elected as attorney general in 1972, the first of his five consecutive terms. He served until 1992.
Guste also was a former proprietor of Antoine's Restaurant, the historic French Quarter restaurant opened by his great-grandfather Antoine Alciatore in 1840.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home. Services are pending.
