WELSH — A Welsh police officer is under investigation after shooting a suspect who pulled a handgun on him during a traffic

stop at the intersection of Beaufort and North Adams streets late Monday, authorities said.

“Around 11:30 p.m., one of our officers

made a traffic stop,” said Welsh Police Chief Marcus Crochet. “During

the course of

the traffic stop, the subject produced a handgun, at which time

our officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.”

Police have not yet released the names of either the victim or the officer. The victim was taken to an area hospital and was

later transported to the LSU hospital in Shreveport, state police said.

The officer, who was not injured, was placed on paid administrative leave, Crochet said.

State police Sgt. James Anderson

confirmed Tuesday that state police had been asked to investigate the

shooting. Such investigations

are standard when an officer is involved in a shooting.
