Vermilion Parish deputies shoot pit bull

ABBEVILLE (AP) — The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office says deputies shot and wounded a pit bull that ran at them while they

were investigating a complaint that its owner let it run loose.

According to a news release sent Friday, a veterinarian treated the dog and deputies cited Brittany Meche for allegedly breaking

the leash law.

The sheriff's office says the Dec. 23

complaint was the fourth alleging that she let her dog run loose. The

person who complained

told deputies the dog growls at people.

Sheriff Mike Couvillon says deputies don't shoot just because animals are unleashed, but are trained to protect themselves.

He says the dog was barking and growling while it ran at them, and he stands by their decision.

He says they fired seven shots. Three hit the dog.
