BATON ROUGE (AP) — Treasurer John Kennedy says Louisiana’s unclaimed property program returned more money to people in the last fiscal year than in the history of the 41-year-old program.

Kennedy says the program gave back $31 million to more than 25,000 people in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Unclaimed property involves old savings or checking accounts, payroll checks, stock proceeds, insurance proceeds, oil and gas royalty payments and other items that people are owed but that they haven’t claimed.

If a business can’t track down the person, it turns the money over to the state.

Despite the record year, Kennedy says $575 million remains unclaimed.
