A Texas woman died Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident on US 190 in Beauregard Parish, state police said.
Sgt. James Anderson said 71-year-old Guadalupe L. Stinespring, of Llano, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene and two other people were sent to the hospital with moderate injuries.
Anderson said 59-year-old George L. Hodges Jr., of DeQuincy, was driving east on US 190 when he crossed the center line and traveled into the westbound lane. Hodges collided with a car driven by 71-year-old Robert L. Stinespring, of Llano.
“Troopers suspect Hodges may have fallen asleep prior to the crash,” Anderson said. “Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis.”
Hodges, who was charged with driving left of center, and Stinespring were transported to area hospitals with moderate injuries.
Anderson said all three people were wearing seat belts.
“Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that sleep deprivation can impair one’s ability to drive safely,” Anderson said. “Some studies have shown that cognitive impairment caused by sleep deprivation can affect driving as much as alcohol impairment. Drivers are encouraged to be well rested before getting behind the wheel and to take breaks whenever necessary.”
