A man suspected in a June killing at an Iris Street apartment complex was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder Thursday.

Authorities said Cody Ray Lucero, 19, killed Edward Lee Wilkes, 18, in Lucero’s second-story apartment with a single gunshot

to the head.

In a court hearing July 26, officers said Lucero told a friend he shot Wilkes after he came through the window of the apartment.

Sgt. Franklin Fondel said during the hearing that Lucero told police he shot Wilkes when Wilkes kicked his knee, causing his

finger to hit the trigger.

Wilkes was also a tenant of the apartments, living on the third floor. He was killed around 11 p.m. June 8.

Lucero was arrested at a motel in Kinder on June 9, Fondel said.

Lucero is being held in the Calcasieu Correctional Center on $1 million bond.
