The volleyball state playoff brackets were released on Monday and included seven teams in the top three divisions from Southwest

Three of those seven squad were lucky enough to draw first-round byes.

In Division II, Sam Houston (22-11) ran

the table in District 1 to grab the No. 7 seed and a bye. The seventh

seed is their

highest playoff spot since their No. 1 in 2008 when they reached

the state championship game. This is the first bye they have

earned since then.

“We are really excited about getting

back into the top eight and being able to get that first-round bye,” said

Sam Houston head

coach René Fontenot. “The girls are finally starting to see the

end result of putting in all of those extra hours in practice

and workouts.”

Led by Carleigh Chaumont, Kennedy McLemore and Sam Trahan, Sam Houston has turned a young team into a potential contender.

“It has been necessary (to field a

young team) from the start of the season and through various innjuries.

At times we have

had four freshmen and one sophomore on the court all at once,” Fontenot said. “Our upperclassmen have done a good job of mentoring

them and including them.

“I knew when this freshmen class came

in that it was one of the strongest that I had ever seen. These girls

are highly talented.”

The Lady Broncos will face the winner of No. 10 Assumption and No. 23 West Jefferson in the regional round.

In Division III the Iota Lady Bulldogs (31-8) picked up the highest seed among area teams at No. 5 and will await the winner

of No. 12 North Vermilion and No. 21 Lake Area New Tech in the regional round.

Also picking up a bye in Division III were the St. Louis Saints (23-9), who sit at No. 6 and will await the winner of No. 11

Berwick and No. 22 West Feliciana.

“Since they started giving first-round

byes to the top eight playoff teams it has always been a goal for us and

we have been

fortunate enough to be able to accomplish it every year,” said St.

Louis head coach Luke Pousson. “It says a lot because we

have gone through a lot this season and we were still able to get a

top-eight seed and have a good shot in the playoffs.”

The Saints dominated district competition en route to their high seed thanks to consistent performances from Annaleigh Drost,

Da’Sha Pitre, Frances Thompson and Shannon Dalton.

“We have a pretty tough run to go

through to make it far in the playoffs and the girls understand that if

we are going to

accomplish something special, we are going to have to do something

special to get there,” said Pousson. “The girls are going

to be up for every challenge, and they know it is going to be

tough, but we have already risen to some pretty tough challenges

this year.”

Four other area squad qualified for the playoffs, two hosting first round games and two traveling for them.

The Barbe Lady Bucs (26-8) are seeded No. 10 and will host No. 23 Hahnville in Division I, while No. 9 Westlake (23-7) barely

missed out on a bye and will play host to No. 24 Mansfield in Division III.

Going on the road to start the playoffs will be No. 18 Leesville (16-15) in Division II. The Wampus Cats will travel to No. 15 Academy of Our

Lady, while No.19 DeQuincy (16-13) in Division III who travel to face No. 14 De La Salle.
