BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said planes and boats will spray herbicide to kill giant
salvinia on Toledo Bend this week.
Spokeswoman Ashley Wethey said aerial spraying on Thursday will concentrate on shallow, treeless backwaters. She
says airboats crews will spray tree-filled waters and edges of the treatment area on Friday.
Notices indicating areas to be sprayed will be posted at boat ramps. Activities in the rest of the lake won't be affected.
Giant salvinia is an invasive weed that can create a thick mat on still water. It was first found in Louisiana in 1998, on
Toledo Bend.
Low water from the recent drought helped to keep it at a minimum. However, water levels are returning to normal, providing
lots of open water for the plants.
