METAIRIE (AP) — New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has waived defensive end Greg Romeus, a 2011 draft choice who never played because of injuries.

The 6-foot-5, 267-pound Romeus took part in offseason practices this week before the club announced the decision to waive him Thursday afternoon.

Romeus starred at Pittsburgh, but his draft stock tumbled because of back and knee injuries that required surgery, and the Saints took him with a seventh-round pick.

He was placed on injured reserve in 2011 because his rehabilitation from his college knee injury — a torn right anterior cruciate ligament — was not complete by the end of training camp.

He returned healthy last season, only to tear his left ACL in camp, and also spent 2012 on injured reserve.
