SPAR to host adults-only swim night on Aug. 7

Sulphur Parks and Recreation is exclusively inviting adults 21 and up to check out its newest attractions. SPAR is hosting

an “adult swim” night 6-8 p.m. Aug. 7 for adults to enjoy the park’s raging river and Parrot Island, kid-free.

The facility recently opened its $1.7 million expansion, nearly doubling the water park’s square footage. AunJelle Burton,

park supervisor, said the more than 600-foot-long raging river is SPAR’s own take on a lazy river.

“It’s not just your average lazy river,” she said. “There’s a 20-minute cycle of waves and then 10 minutes with no waves.

They’re pretty strong waves, so it’s a powerful punch as you travel around the river.”

Burton said the addition also includes two “paddle rivers” with no waves, a beach-style lounging area and Parrot Island, which

has canopies, lounge chairs and picnic tables, along with a play area equipped with an oversized tipping bucket, bubblers

and water guns.

Burton said that although the expansion appeals to an older crowd, it’s been popular with all ages.

“The older people are really enjoying laying in an inner tube and floating down the river,” she said. “Then the younger people

are really enjoying the waves.”

Norman Farr, SPAR director, told the American Press in April that money for the expansion came out of the facility’s general fund and is “money that we have saved over the years.”

Some of the expansion costs included improving existing amenities.

Admission for adult swim night is $6 for in-district residents and $9 for out-of-district residents.

The water park is open to the public 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday;

and 1-7 p.m. Sunday.

The last weekend the water park will be open is Aug. 17-18.

Admission is $4 for in-district residents and $6 for out-of-district residents to the “basic” water park and $6 for in-district

and $9 for out-of-district for full water park admission, including the raging river.
