Rachal’s 21 points lead Cowgirls to victory

HACKENSACK, N.J. — Freshman Victoria Rachal scored a career-high 21 points to lead the McNeese State women’s basketball team to a 69-62 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday.

McNeese (3-2) will take part in the Long Island Turkey Classic Friday and Saturday. The Cowgirls will face LIU at 1 p.m.

Rachal was 8 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and she grabbed five rebounds. Rachal scored 11 first-half points.

Allison Baggett and Cecilia Okoye also scored in double figures, ending the game with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Okoye led the Cowgirls in rebounds with eight.

McNeese took the lead 6 minutes into the game and led by as many as 14 points with 16:50 left in the game, 41-27.

Fairleigh Dickinson pulled within 55-50, but McNeese went on another run to take its last double-digit lead of the game, 63-52, with 5 minutes left. A layup by NeTanya Jones then a floating jumper by Baggett extended lead to 11 points.

FDU came back to score the next six points to cut the lead to 63-57 with 2:27 left.

McNeese managed the game clock and picked up key rebounds at both ends of the court to seal the victory.
