BATON ROUGE (AP) — The funeral for former LSU coach Paul Dietzel will be Friday morning at First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.
Dietzel led the Tigers to their first football national championship, in 1958. He died Tuesday at age 89, after a brief illness.
University sports spokesman Michael Bonnet says the funeral will be at 11 a.m., with visitation starting at 9 a.m.
The family asks for donations to the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes rather than flowers.
Dietzel coached LSU from 1955 until 1961, then Army and South Carolina. He also broadcast Southern Conference football games and helped create Samford University's athletics department before returning to LSU as athletics director from 1978 until 1982.
