McNeese State University and the eight other University of Louisiana System schools will hold America Recycles Day events
Thursday, Nov. 15.
Officials said the events, part of a yearlong partnership between the UL System and Keep Louisiana Beautiful, will promote
waste reduction, litter abatement and recycling among more than 90,000 students.
The nine universities will use a $30,000 grant — $3,300 per school — from Keep Louisiana Beautiful for the on-campus events,
as well as a larger campus/community project in the spring.
“We’re hoping that students will pay
more attention to recycling and that we can do what is expected of us to
bring the campus
in the right direction,” said Kedrick Nicholas, director of the
Holbrook Student Union. “This grant money is allowing us to
further our recycling in the long term on campus.”
McNeese students will be able to trade in bottles and cans for reusable drinking containers and plastic bags for reusable
grocery bags at the quad. There will also be a recycling awareness display contest and four recycling bins distributed in
key areas on campus.
Thursday’s recycling events will be led by student government association presidents, and each school will have a designated
coordinator for the grant activities.
“We’ve seen a good response from our students,” said McNeese SGA President Davante Lewis. “What I’m really looking forward
to is educating students on why these green initiative efforts are so important.”
