A 24-year-old Lake Charles woman has been charged with two counts of child desertion after casino employees found two children unattended in a hallway in a hotel, authorities said.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Kayla N. Barbery, 1860 Arsene Road, was arrested on May 12.
“Deputies were dispatched to a local casino hotel in reference to a 3-year-old and a 9-month-old child being left unattended in a hotel room for several hours,” Myers said in a news release. “Deputies were told that the hotel operator received numerous calls from the 3-year-old child, who was staying in a room registered Barbery.”
Myers said deputies then located Barbery and transported her to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
“When questioned by detectives, Barbery confirmed she left the two small children unattended for over 12 hours,” Myers said. “They were found by casino employees in a hallway in the hotel.”
Myers said the Department of Child and Family Services is investigating the complaint.
Judge Wilford Carter set Barbery’s bond at $500.
Detective Trey Thomas was the lead investigator.
