A 41-year-old Lake Charles man has been arrested after allegedly stealing from the Academy Sports & Outdoors Store where he worked, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Maurice E. Nugent, 5852 Bennie Lane, was charged with theft $500-$1,500 and released on a $1,000 bond set by Judge Ron Ware.

Myers said Nugent was captured on video carrying a new trolling motor, worth over $500, out of the store. The trolling motor has since disappeared and has not been paid for nor returned to the store’s inventory.

"Nugent is suspected in the theft of several thousands of dollars of additional merchandise from the store," Myers said. "The investigation is continuing with additional charges and arrests expected.

"If anyone has any information regarding stolen merchandise from Academy, please contact Detective James Leubner at 494-4509."
