The Sulphur Lady Tors have been finding strength in numbers and will try to extend their fast start and maintain control
of the District 3-5A basketball race when they host Sam Houston tonight.
The Tors (15-3, 2-0 District 3-5A) and Barbe (13-4, 1-0) are the only undefeated teams in the district. Barbe plays at Carencro
tonight.
Sulphur has won 10 of its last 12 games, with both losses coming at the hands of defending Class 4A state champion St. Thomas
More by a combined seven points.
The Tors are led by senior guard Hannah Cupit, a McNeese signee who averages 14 points per games on the season, 17 in district
play.
Head coach Helen Lefevre said the Tors good start is a result of production from the other four players on the court.
“One of our strengths is scoring, we are more balanced now,” Lefevre said.
“Hannah gets her big games as you would
expect from a senior starter, but we have other guards who can shoot in
Ally Cupit
and Becca Brooks. Brooks is our point guard, we have moved Hannah
to the three. Now we are able to run Hannah off more screens
and focus on getting the ball into her hands more, rather than
have her have to created all the time.”
Lefevre said the Tors have been able to do more damage in the paint than in recent seasons.
“Lauren Pace, a sophomore, is our leading rebounder (8 per game) and Kristina Metoyer is playing the four and has been scoring
about 10 points per game, giving us a scoring threat inside, something we have not had recently.”
Sam Houston (9-9, 1-1) rebounded from a two-point loss to Acadiana in its district opener with a 55-47 road win over Carencro
Dec. 18.
“(Broncos guard) Nicole Clark can light
it up, she is a a 3-point shooter that can also penetrate,” Lefevre
said. “Abby Jolie
can do the same thing, she is a a younger versipon of Clark. Their
girls inside are scrappy, they get their hands on rebound
and block some shots.”
In the boys game, Sulphur and Sam Houston will both be looking for their first district win after opening 3-5A play with a
pair of losses.
