Lacassine thumps Pitkin

LACASSINE — The Lacassine Lady Cardinals are on a mission and without saying it, have their eye on a potential matchup with

a local rival.

The No. 3-seeded Lady Cardinals used high-pressure defense and a quick pace to overwhelm the No. 14-seeded Pitkin Lady Tigers

98-41 on Tuesday, setting up a Class B quarterfinal matchup with No. 6 Castor.

Castor disposed of No. 11 Midland 46-32 Tuesday night.

Lacassine (33-1) jumped out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, whipping a variety of full-court

passes to set up easy baskets most of the evening against Pitkin (19-16).

“They came out prepared and did a good

job of getting the ball to the middle of the floor against our

pressure,” Lacassine

head coach Jeremy Hollier said. “We made a few adjustments taking

the middle away. We practice the pace all the time because

we know the best team in this class plays that way and with such

pressure that we have to mirror that.

“It’s a way of basketball that’s different from what we’ve done in the past,” Hollier added. “It wears them out and they need

a break here and there. But they enjoy that style of being able to dictate the speed of the game.”

Hollier was perhaps referring to No. 1-seed Fairview, who beat Bell City 91-33 on Tuesday

Lacassine kept the pressure on the Lady Tigers through the majority of the game, choosing to keep their starters in until

there was 3:49 left in the fourth quarter.

Three of those starters — senior Abbie Melanson, sophomore Madyson Brasseaux and freshman Haley Cooley — scored over 20 points,

with Melanson and Brasseaux tying for a game-high with 23 points.

Hollier sets his team up around Melanson and Brasseaux, an inside-outside combo that gives opponents matchup problems.

“They’re our two center pieces,” he

said. “They work very well together and kind of have a connection of

knowing where each

other are on the floor. If one has a mismatch, they’ll feed the

other the ball and vice-versa. They work very hard every day.”
