With the help of a grant from NBC’s Smash Make-A-Musical, LaGrange High School will treat the public to a grand musical theater

performance for the second year. This year’s production is “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.”

Shelly Buller, school theater director,

said LaGrange won the grant last year with the support of area

residents. Buller said

the grant gave the school the funds needed to put on a large

production complete with light shows, fog, cartoons and lasers.

Buller said more than 80 students are part of the production.

“Teaching students music and performance in the context of a musical production helps bring learning to life,” Buller said

in an email. “They can read about the arts, they can watch performances, but when they actually become part of a musical —

no matter if it’s props, a solo or a stage manager — that is when the magic happens.”

Buller said she has seen her students

growing by leaps and bounds this year preparing for the performance.

Learning to appreciate

the arts will last a lifetime for the students, she said.

“When our community comes to see this show, they will see the lights, the costumes, the music, but they will also see the

magic of learning that comes when children work so hard,” Buller said.

According to Buller, the performing arts department chose “Aladdin” because it captures imaginations with the mystery of the

desert, genies, princesses and flying carpet rides. Buller said it also has a relatable story.

“It is a coming-of-age tale about a boy who wants something so badly that he tries to be something he is not,” she said. “And

a girl who wants to please her father and at the same time she wants to follow her heart.”

Performances will be held over two weekends in the LaGrange auditorium: at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15; at 2 p.m. Sunday,

Feb. 16; at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.

Admission is $5; tickets are available at the school front office and at the door.
