A juvenile and a Lake Charles man were arrested Thursday after a gun was found in a backpack at Washington-Marion High School, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said 17-year-old Ray J. Murray, 2012 9th St., and a 16-year-old were charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

“The juvenile, a Washington-Marion student who had not been at school since December, threw the backpack and jacket he was carrying when confronted by school officials,” Myers said Thursday in a news release. “Another student, 17-year-old Shaiqwan Marshall, caught the jacket and backpack.

“A handgun was found in the backpack when it was searched. When questioned by deputies, the juvenile and Marshall both denied ownership.”

Myers said Murray was seen giving the backpack to the juvenile earlier in the day.

Marshall was charged with obstruction of justice.

Cpl. William Powell was the arresting deputy and detective Kathy LeBlanc was the lead investigator, Myers said.
