NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Two big plays for
first-quarter touchdowns started John Curtis on its way to the LHSAA
Class 2A State Championship
with a 35-13 victory over Evangel Christian Academy on Saturday.
The win gave the Patriots (14-0) their 25th state championship and extended their winning streak to 28 games.
Duke Riley's touchdown on an 80-yard return of a fumble recovery and George Moreira's 30-yard touchdown run gave the Patriots
a 14-0 lead despite running just three offensive plays in the first quarter.
Evangel (12-3) made it 14-7 when Dakota Duron connected with Trent Taylor for a 17-yard touchdown, but the Patriots answered
three plays later with a 72-yard touchdown run by Sherman Badie.
After Josh Davis' field goal cut the lead to 21-10, Patrick Morton scored from a yard out to give the Patriots a 28-10 halftime
lead.
Jeremy Jamison ran 53 yards for the winning touchdown as Karr defeated Neville 29-22 Friday night in the
LHSAA Class 4A State Championship, avenging a loss to the Tigers in last year's final.
The Cougars (13-0) won their second football title, ending a 27-game winning streak for Neville (13-1).
Brian Barefoot's 45-yard field goal had given Neville a 22-21 lead with less than 6 minutes to go before Jamison's touchdown,
his second of the game.
After the Cougars gained the lead, their defense stiffened, forcing Neville to punt after a three-and-out. Karr then ran out
the clock to capture the championship.
Trailing 15-13 after a back-and-forth first half, Neville took a 19-15 lead on a 1-yard run by John Diarse, whose 15-yard
pass to Andre Fuller produced the game's first score.
Karr answered with a seven-play, 66-yard drive, culminating in Devante Noil's 1-yard touchdown run for a 21-19 lead.
Parkview Baptist answered a first-quarter touchdown by Notre Dame of Crowley with 42 points of its own
for a 42-7 victory in the LHSAA Class 3A State Championship Game on Saturday.
The Eagles (13-0) captured their fourth state championship, and their first since defeating Patterson 24-20 in 2010.
Austin Thibodeaux's 2-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter gave the Pioneers (12-2) a brief 7-0 lead before
Parkview exploded for 21 points in the second quarter.
After Hezekiah Randolph scored on a 17-yard touchdown run, the Eagles recovered an onsides kick and drove to another touchdown,
with Randolph scoring from a yard out. A two-point conversion gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead.
Brennan Bozeman connected with Seth Shaw on the Eagles' last possession of the first half to make the score 21-7 and all but
put the game out of reach.
Ouachita Christian captured the LHSAA Class 1A State Championship with a victory over Haynesville
on Friday.
It was the fifth state championship and second in a row for the Eagles (15-0) and extended their winning streak to 30 games.
Trailing 8-7 at halftime, Ouachita Christian
opened the second half with a 10-play, 69-yard drive culminating in
Colby Webb's
second of three touchdown runs, a 1-yard score for a 14-8 lead.
Webb added an 18-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles defense helped seal the victory by stopping Haynesville (11-3) on fourth-and-goal from the 3 midway through the
fourth quarter.
Haynesville's lone touchdown came on Kendrick Jackson's 5-yard run in the second quarter.
Webb's first touchdown came midway through the second quarter after an 80-yard interception by Tanner Pennybaker put the Eagles
deep in Golden Tornados territory. Two plays later Webb scored from the 1.
