Islanders complete sweep of McNeese

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The McNeese baseball team was swept in a Southland Conference weekend series by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday as the Islanders defeated the Cowboys, 9-1.

McNeese (20-25, 7-14 SLC) remains in eighth place in the league standings, one game ahead of Nicholls State. AMCC (28-20, 13-8 SLC) moved into a three-way tie for second place, two games behind conference leader Sam Houston State (15-6).

Islanders starter Matt Danton (5-2) got the win after tossing 613 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. McNeese’s Jason Gibson (2-1) lost after allowing four runs, three unearned, on seven hits and struck out five batters in 513 innings of work.

Five different Cowboys got a hit. Left fielder Skylar Barrentine went 1-for-2 with a home run.

AMCC took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after RBIs from right fielder Kyle Danford and catcher Brad Lamberti.

The Cowboys cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. Barrentine smacked a homer, his first of the season, over the right field wall.

The Islanders extended their lead in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Jonathan Gonzales, who doubled to lead off the inning, reached home on a fielding error after left fielder Jordan Lee’s single to right-center scored shortstop Zach Taylor to give AMCC a 4-1 lead.

AMCC broke it open for three runs in the seventh, getting RBIs from first baseman Brad Porras, third baseman Brandon Tierney and Taylor to make the score 7-1.

One more run was added in the eighth inning on a two-run homer from Porras to give the Islanders a 9-1 lead.

McNeese will return home for its final mid-week game of the regular season Tuesday, as the Cowboys host Houston Cougars in a 6:30 p.m. start.””msu-logo-11-27-13
