BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns rookie linebacker Barkevious Mingo has been cleared to play and is expected his NFL debut this week after being sidelined with a bruised lung.
Mingo was injured during an Aug. 15 exhibition against Detroit while covering a kickoff. He experienced shortness of breath, spit up some blood on the sideline and was hospitalized for two days.
He practiced last week but was restricted from participating in any contact drills. He missed Sunday’s opener against Miami, but coach Rob Chudzinski said Wednesday that the first-round pick may play Sunday when the Browns visit Baltimore.
The Browns selected Mingo with the No. 6 overall pick in April’s draft. The former LSU standout is listed as a backup to starter Jabaal Sheard, but he’s expected to be rotated into Cleveland’s defense as an edge rusher.
